Petrified wood, also known as petrified tree is a special type of fossilised wood. In Ancient Greek 'petra' means 'rock' or 'stone' therefore petrified wood is literally translated to 'wood turned into stone'. Petrified wood forms when woody stems of plants are buried in wet sediments saturated with dissolved minerals. The lack of oxygen slows decay of the wood, allowing minerals to replace cell walls and to fill void spaces in the wood.
Ethically sourced from a family in Java, Indonesia, the gemstone is carved into a large water drop shape and set in sterling silver 92.5. Strung on silver chain.
